I tried to export a channel's data as csv and then compare to some datasets I have in MATLAB. Yet when I imported the csv file data the time text string was not identified by the datetime function. Of course I just wrote a function to convert the text string in excel to something matlab would like, but this is sort of the error I'd expect not to encounter using a cohesive analysis platform.

Your concern is noted, and we are working to improve the import and export capabilities at present. One work around would be to not export your files out of the MATLAB environment. Use thingSpeakRead to read data in MATLAB, and do your analysis there. Unfortunately excel does not usually recognize ISO 8601 as datetime without some manipulation, as you saw.
