i'm trying to replicate the following project (http://nothans.com/measure-wi-fi-signal-levels-with-the-esp8266-and-thingspeak)
one of my problems is getting the following link ( http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json) to show up on my arduino, even after following the instructions step by step, it still refuses to show up.
the board sensor manager pic below, shows the absence of the thingspeak file and also an esp file of any description.
the tutorial then states "Back on the Arduino IDE, under tools, configure the following settings:" esp easypng pic enclosed below . but what do we configure and how.
can someone please tell me why it's not happening.

I have figured out what the issue is and have updated my tutorial. In new versions of Arduino, you need to load the Boards Manager one time in order for the board URL to work. Close and reopen Arduino. Click on Tools, Board, and Boards Manager.... to open the board manager. You should now see NodeMCU boards listed.
